Finding a good surgeon
30 September 2008
"My father has been diagnosed as having prostate cancer which requires treatment. He is probably going to choose surgery for treatment and wishes to find the most experienced/successful local surgeon for this kind of operation. How can he do this?"It's really your GP's responsibility to make sure you have the information you need to choose a surgeon. However, we found three potentially useful sources:
- NHS Choices' Compare hospitals (uses generic measures, not prostate-specific ones)
- DrFoster's (an NHS content partner) Consultant Guide
- Royal College of Surgeons of England
We note that the urological surgeons' websites provided no such information. Eventually, you should be able to do access success rates through the NHS Choices website.
Please note that UK Prostate Link can't provide specific clinical advice. What we can do is assemble all of the links on our site that address your question, and let information providers know where there are gaps.
